ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET KARAXE

April 11, 2008

It’s been a while since I posted.  Partly, I’ve been busy, partly, it’s getting harder for me to find good items on ABE.  Many fascinating items have no image included.  Some images are terrible- dark, fuzzy, cell-phone-like shots of books propped up against shelves.  So, I’ve been getting creative in finding likely candidates.  Rather than just searching for keywords like OCLC, Worldcat, none, not, etc., I’ve been looking at things “not in COPAC,” “extremely scarce” and so on. Then I look for them in Worldcat.  This is much more labor intensive.  Today, I looked at older titles from Vantage Press, a vanity press, and thus less likely to be collected by libraries (in theory).  I like “Escape from the Planet Karaxe.”  The title and cover illustration seem more like an Avalon SF title from the late 1950s than something published in 1970.

Bookseller:
Justin Croft Antiquarian Books ABA, ILAB
(Faversham, KEN, United Kingdom)

Price: $835.62

For sale at: www.abebooks.com

Book Description: London: Newman & Co., n.d. [c. 1864.], 1864. 32mo (60 × 48 mm.), 15 tinted engraved views presented concertina fashion on a long folding sheet. Publisher’s blindstamped green cloth, title and imprint in gilt to upper cover. Slightly rubbed, paper lining to spine slightly cracked. An excellent copy. A rare miniature seaside souvenir from Deal, Kent. Though undated, several of the views depict the iron pleasure pier opened in 1864 and perhaps this ephemeral item was printed to accompany the opening. The views present a rather elegant view of a Victorian seaside town full of fashionably attired promenaders. The town would have been working hard to dispel its reputation for infamy and gloom reported earlier in the century by Cobbett (“a most villainous place. It is full of filthy looking people”) and later by Dickens in Bleak House. Besides the pier there are images of the esplanade, castle, barracks and church. Not in COPAC. Bookseller Inventory # 1694

An Almanack for the Year of our Lord God MDCCC

March 4, 2008

Annuals and serials can be confusing to look up on WorldCat, but if I’m not mistaken, this is only listed in an electronic version put out by the Gale Group.  I believe that they may have digitized a copy owned by the British Library.  Great for access, but not quite the same.  This beautiful material object calls out to be handled.

Maggie Pepper [salesman’s dummy]

February 15, 2008

I’m fascinated by salesman’s dummy copies, which are simultaneously “book” and “not book.”  Like dust jackets and publisher’s catalogs, libraries seem to neglect collecting dummies.  This is shortsighted.  Dummies represent the publisher’s very first attempt to present a book to the world, even if the world is represented by the retail or library buyer.  “Maggie Pepper” is a more complicated case, given its history as play and motion picture, but the copy shown below is striking, and is indeed “Not in WorldCat.”
